Hi!!!! My name is Wendy and I am Milo's little sister, and this is my story
I try not to think too much of my past, but I can tell you my story. In my previous home, I was so badly mistreated being kicked and thrown about. To this day I have problems with my shoulder clicking when I walk and mom tells me I have a horrible snore from when my previous owners kicked me around. I had a litter of pups, but sadly, I have no idea what ever became of my babies. Our kind vet told my new parents that I was the victim of a puppy mill and that people who run puppy mills should be shot.
When I was no longer of any use, I was tossed out on the streets of Caerphilly, South Wales to fend for myself. I was rescued off the streets by a kind dog warden who took me in and sent me to Pine Ridge when I was about 15 months old. By the time I arrived at the shelter, I was so thin, no fur on my ears or around my eyes, and frightened of everyone, even other dogs. Many people came to see me, but no one wanted to take me home becuase I had problems from my past.
Just when I had about given up hope, one Sunday, the owner of Pine Ridge came to my kennel and said we were going to give this another try. I walked out on my lead, ready for another disappointment, because I have had bad experiences with other dogs. There were these two kind people holding a white Jack Russell (a kinda chubby Jack Russell) on a lead and they were calling him Milo. I went up to Milo, gave him the old 'what for' and he looked at me saying 'what IS your problem kid?'. He then promptly turned his bum at me and continued investigating the grounds of the shelter. No other dog had done this to ME, so I went to have another go and, again, I was presented with his bum in my face. Now I was curious. The kind people took me for a walk around the grounds with this guy Milo, who kept ignoring me, almost on purpose.
As we turned around to go back to the shelter, Milo looked at me and smiled. Oh he has the most gorgeous brown eyes and a smile to die for. We walked into a room (to see how we would get along) and I knew then that he was a good guy and would make a great older brother. You can imagine my joy when these people, and Milo, turned to the shelter officer and said 'we'll take her'. I couldn't believe my good fortune. We went home in a nice car and when we arrived at my new home there were plenty of nice toys waiting for me, a fresh bowl of clean water, doggie treats galore and a nice new bed. Can you believe it....my new mom and dad even let me lie on the couch and sleep on their bed with Milo. They are very patient with me, helping me around my emotional and physical difficulties, one day at a time. We have a few setbacks, but we are making progress.
Milo is such a good teacher, teaching me how to play, have a game of 'chase Milo', how to be finicky with my food, beg for treats (this was difficult for him as I was never permitted to beg for anything), how to make the most out of a rawhide chew and a sad, sorrowful look. I am now learning how to grab at a blanket or tug toy and have a good ole game of 'Russell Tussell' with Milo...it's alot of fun!!
Milo has taught me so much, but I was still having problems with being around other dogs. My mummy and daddy tried everything they could think of, but nothing helped, I was just too scared. Then a very nice vet said I had bad back legs and suggested I should go for swimming lessons and it was the start of a whole new life for me. I found something that made me feel special, and I wasn't so scared anymore! Then one of the swimming instructors suggested that we should try some puppy lessons with a nice man called Pete at K9Planet . Me! Puppy classes, I'm old enough to be some of these kid's mother!! But what do you know? It really helped, and I've even earned my Bronze Certificate, for being a good doggy citizen!! Not bad for a little girl from the valleys who no one wanted, huh?
I am grateful for the people who took me in along the way and helped me find my new family. I only hope other dogs can be this fortunate and that my puppies (wherever they may be) may never have to go through what their mother did. Please do all you can to make puppy mills illegal and have their operations closed down for good.
I love my new home and my new brother so much, working my way to becoming just as spoiled as Milo is....and more!!!!! I have a nice home, lots of love, lots of treats and so many nice toys. Most important of all, I have two very loving parents who take very good care of me.
